A Homemade Version of Your Favorite Take Out Dish

Blog post thumbnail

Sometimes, after a long day all you want to do is relax on the couch with a plate of your favorite take out meal. Unfortunately, this isn’t a healthy or budget friendly habit to pick up. Next time you find yourself craving something quick and delicious, instead of calling the Chinese restaurant down the street, whip up a batch of this (Un)Fried “Rice” Quinoa from 2007 grad Arielle Fierman. This dish is quick to make and it’s a great healthy alternative to take out.

(Un)Fried “Rice” Quinoa

INGREDIENTS:
1 box quinoa (beige, red or multi-colored) (approx 2 cups quinoa, 4 cups water)
3 eggs (farm-fresh)
1 cup frozen peas (thaw by rinsing under water)
1 red pepper (chopped)
2 carrots (chopped, sliced or julienned)
2 scallions (chopped)
1 white onion (chopped)
1 tbs Sesame Oil (or olive oil or butter to cook eggs)
3 tbs Toasted Sesame Oil (to taste)
4 tbsp Tamari (wheat-free + great alternative to soy sauce) (to taste)
2 tbsp Sesame seeds (optional)
Sea Salt
Pepper (white or black)

The Great Egg Controversy: Healthy or Not?

Blog post thumbnail

There are few foods more controversial than the incredible, edible egg. As real nutritional powerhouses, eggs are high in choline, which enhances brain function; the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which fight disease; and high-quality protein. There is even evidence that egg consumption may protect against breast cancer.

Yet eggs are also high in cholesterol, and for decades, doctors advised people to limit their egg consumption in order to prevent heart disease. But when research showed that dietary cholesterol impacts LDL (“bad”) blood cholesterol far less than previously thought, the American Heart Association changed its tune in 2000. Current guidelines now allow for one egg a day for healthy adults.

What Is Your Sugar Craving Telling You?

Blog post thumbnail

Do you ever find yourself reaching for a chocolate chip cookie mid-afternoon or a glass of wine when you get home from work? We all have cravings for certain foods from time to time, but what is the underlining cause of these cravings? Usually, when you want a piece of chocolate or a salty snack, it doesn’t mean that your body needs that food, but instead it is missing something else. The best way to eliminate cravings completely, is to figure out the underlying cause so you can feed your body what it is really hungry for!

Lack of water

Often when you are thirsty, your body registers the feeling as hunger instead of thirst. Make sure you are drinking enough water through out the day, and drink a glass of water when you feel a craving coming on.

6 Foods for a Spring Liver Detox

Blog post thumbnail

Spring is an optimal time to refresh your energy and start something new. It’s also a great time to simplify your eating and choose foods that will support your overall health.

According to many ancient health philosophies such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, the spring season rules the liver, an organ that’s essential for overall wellness, but especially digestion.

The liver helps break down, distribute, and store nourishment, and it helps form and break down blood. Additionally, as Ayurvedic expert and guest speaker John Douillard says, the liver is the “janitor” for your body and it is essential for your body’s ability to naturally clean and detoxify itself.

You don’t need to make an extreme change in your eating to cleanse your liver and boost your overall health. Adding a few new foods that support liver health can do the trick. And fortunately, Mother Nature provides foods in springtime that help the liver renew itself.

Here are six foods that support liver cleansing:

Lindsay Mack Helps Women Become Empowered and Nourished

Blog post thumbnail

Since graduating from the Health Coach Training Program last year, Lindsay Mack has built a successful career around empowerment, knowledge, and self-love.

As a resident actor turned Health Coach who treated her lifelong anxiety and depression with diet and lifestyle changes, Lindsay now teaches other women that self-healing in an all-natural way is possible.

This is why her company Sophrosune Wellness emphasizes body communication and self-love instead of cutting calories or dieting. Lindsay believes that with a healthy and balanced frame of mind, the desired weight will come effortlessly.

What were you doing prior to enrolling at Integrative Nutrition?

I was a resident actor at a professional theatre company in Manhattan and I worked 60 hours a week to support my art. I was miserable, unhealthy, and always broke. I was also on medication for lifelong issues with anxiety, panic, and depression. I was sick, sad, and really lost.

Simple Eco-Friendly Tips for a Happy, Healthy Earth Day

Blog post thumbnail

Earth Day is just three days away! How will you be celebrating?

At Integrative Nutrition, we make sustainable choices everyday to help support a healthier, happier life and planet. We know that even the smallest changes can greatly reduce our environmental impact.

That’s why we clean our work spaces and bathrooms with all-natural products, eat lunch with real plates and silverware, drink our coffee and tea from mugs, and use water filtering machines instead of water bottles (just to name a few!).

This Earth Day, you can join us to make an even bigger impact. For every student who enrolls by April 25, we’ll donate $50 to the Earth Day Network’s healthy school initiative. It’s our way of saying thanks to those who care about sustainable living and the future of the planet. After all, our good health depends on the health of our environment.

How else can you start living a cleaner, greener life? Add some or all of these small changes into your daily routine to make a big difference.

Happy Earth Day! Today’s the perfect day to start making simple changes that will help you live a happier, healthier, and greener life— and replacing your commercial makeup products is a great way to start!

Many of us pay close attention to what we put in our bodies. We read labels and minimize our chemical intake by choosing natural, whole foods.  But when it comes to cosmetics, we're not quite as diligent. Have you ever wondered what’s in your foundation, lipstick, or mascara? I bet you’d be surprised to learn that the ingredients found in most commercial makeup products are anything but pretty.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “ the average woman uses 12 products containing 168 unique chemical ingredients every day.” That means that our skin, the largest organ in our body, could be absorbing hundreds of chemicals on a daily basis. The goods news is that there are tons of chemical free makeup products available that are healthy, effective, and help enhance your own natural beauty.

We’ve rounded up our favorite natural and healthy makeup products for you here:
